Lalitpur city, known for its religious, cultural, and historical significance and often referred to as a "City of Temples," is the oldest among the three ancient and important cities of the Kathmandu Valley. It is widely recognized as the most ancient of the three famous cities of the valley—Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur. There is no doubt that this city had settlements from ancient times and developed as a central hub. Once a center of Buddhist religion and culture during the medieval period, this city earned recognition as the City of Fine Arts.
Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Nepal’s oldest municipality, is divided into 29 wards. Among these, Ward No. 5 is particularly rich in religious and cultural heritage. The renowned Shri Mahalaxmi Temple, located here, is famous throughout the country as a Shakti Peeth, where the goddess is worshipped in both her forms—as Bhawani and as Laxmi. Similarly, other notable temples in the ward include the Sano Dakshinkali Temple, Lokeshwar Temple, Jagannath Shiva Temple, Kumari Pati Ganesh Temple, Kailash Basti Ganesh Temple, Suryavinayak Ganesh Temple, and Kumari Devi Temple.
The ward encompasses several neighborhoods such as Mahalaxmi Sthan, Thasikhel, Rizal Basti, Sundar Tole, Kailash Tole, Dhungana Tole, Kailash Basti, Dakshinkali, A.V.M. Chowk, Narayan Bhawan Chowk, Kumari Pati, Harit Park, Siddhi Vinayak Chowk, Lokeshwar, Jagannath Temple, and Uttar Bagaicha Tole.
The ward office is located in its own building at Lagankhel. This ward is home to people from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The residents earn their livelihoods through trade, agriculture, handicrafts, employment, and other professions. The average maximum temperature of the ward is around 32°C, while the minimum can drop to about 2°C. The ward is bordered by Ward No. 19 to the north, Ward No. 14 to the south, Ward No. 15 to the east, and Ward No. 4 to the west.
